LOKMAT APPLLP MAX

Interesting new smartwatch came out called the LOKMAT APPLLP MAX. Massive 2.8" screen and runs Android 9. A bit different than all the Android 10 watches launched in the last few months. The style is not to everyone's taste given the huge size, but has some interesting features.

Lots of controversy on this watch, it is sold under a number of brand names with the generic name appearing to be S999. Apparently a Chinese company called Unisoc (formerly known as Spreadtrum) is behind this watch. Claims are being made that Intellectual Property has been stolen from Wiite how is known for many of these Full Android watches, including the Android 10 watches just released. Not sure how valid these claims are since Unisoc is a pretty big company and could be attempts to squash the competition.

Overall this is a niche watch for sure. However it gets a lot of things right when compared to other large smartphone on wrist devices. Would like to see them succeed and have more options in the Full Android space.

There is another forum that talks about these full android watches but they have banned any discussion on this watch. Seems a bit heavy handed but I am sure they have their reasons.

They make the following claims:
- Bad watches are flooding the market
- There is no support
- Cannot use custom watch faces
- Battery life is bad

The company stole all the work on the software yet they also claim the software is horrible and Google apps don't work well.

Watching the Youtube reviews, the software seems on par with other full android watches.

Suspect they are banning this watch due to competition reasons.

I have read in the comments that some apps don't work with this watch as well as other large rectangular ones like the TICWRIS Max. Netflix and Sling TV App apparently do not work. A problem for people who want to watch movies or tv on this watch.

A few things to be aware on this smartwatch. The display is advertised as going right to the bezel (see top image). In fact the display is much less (see bottom image). While a big screen is advertised, the usable screen is much less.
S999 Actual Screen.jpg
Specifications appear to be exaggerated in some places as well:
  • Uses a Mediatek Helio A22 MT6761 processor which is a quad core processor. Many ads state it is a MT6762 or state it is an octa core processor which is not true. Watch is not that fast due to this slower CPU.
  • Claims to have a 5MP and a 13MP camera. The side camera is actually 1.9MP and the front camera is 8.9MP. Picture quality is quite poor, like smartphones from 10 to 15 years ago
Other Problems
  • It has no volume buttons and it isn't the easiest to increase or decrease the volume in the watch
  • The watch can be detached from the wristband by pressing the button. Great in theory but it the watch can accidentally pop out of the wristband
  • Many of the apps on Google Playstore don't work (i.e. like Netflix mentioned above)
  • Can't rearrange the icons
  • May not be able to install any additional watchfaces beyond what is already available
  • No available firmware for this so not sure if there will be any updates
  • Display rotation does not work for some apps
Beyond the huge form factor which makes it a niche product, the problems are of concern.

Another thing about the watch is that you are stuck with the original launcher and there is no way to change it. This combined with not being able to add new watchfaces are big negatives.

Not aware of any firmware files that can be loaded manually. But you may want to check if there is an OTA upgrade. I have heard that the original firmware is Version 03_p 20210108 and the updated one is via an OTA update is v_5S999 4g_h19_en_v05_p_user20210305-1746.

If software updates are happening, the claims on other sites that this is unsupportable are false. I have heard of at least 3 firmware versions (v3, v4, and v5). Not cool to lie about the product capabilities and support.

Was about to write off this watch but seems like there is active firmware development. If improvements are delivered, closing off some of the negatives, this looks like a winner.

It is my intention to use the watch as a small smartphone based streaming music player over bluetooth earbuds while walking the dog, doing things outside without internet connection. I have been able to install Tidal as the music source with downloaded albums on the watch and listened to them using earbuds (Noble Falcon Pro). Had to play around with setup this way because the sequence for starting streaming operation is only working when I first play an album on the watch speaker then pair the earbuds after. Otherwise I cannot get the album selection in Tidal to function by tapping on the screen. I have decided that I should select a long album before starting outside and let it play in shuttle mode without any further selection changes. Sound quality is really surprisingly good. Volume control is supported by installing an app from the play store "Always visible volume button" by OK soft.
Does anyone know what bluetooth codec is used on the watch?

Since this is a Mediatek MT6761 I suspect it is using Bluetooth 5 with an SBC codec. If you can get to Developer options, you can confirm.

I bluetooth connected to the watch in my pocket with a small JBL Clip4 speaker on my belt and can do walking around outside with nice background music while maintaining safety while dog walking on a roadside. Great application!

Seems like a good solution instead of carrying a smartphone for music.
